The Mendip Resource Group once again paid a visit to the Cadet Centre, Drill Hall Lane in Shepton Mallet on 27 October 2011 for a fun-filled day with Shepton Mallet Platoon.
As well as co-ordinating this annual event, Serjeant Major 'Mother' Levett (Normandy Company First Aid Officer and 2 I/C of Shepton Mallet Platoon) was there to supervise the day's activities along with helpers Major Roger Evans, Regimental Serjeant Major Nigel Levett, Potential Instructor Steph Harris and 12 of the Shepton cadets.
The disabled group was accompanied by their supervisors, Janet Hamlin and Carol Harper, who also doubled up as leaders of the two teams, 'The Crazies' and 'The Krakens'. Major Roger Evans, who has been in the Army Cadet Force for over 50 years, spoke to everyone about his own experiences both as a cadet and adult volunteer to start the programme off. Word searches, First Aid and observation tests were among the entertaining games that were then played by the disabled visitors and cadets. However the most popular competition by far was the 'Wheelchair Football' in which the cadets steered the participants around the 'pitch' trying to avoid any collisions! This was the final game before the guests and cadets departed the hall for a well deserved rest.
