Written by SMI Julie Halford
Four members of the Somerset Cadet Battalion (The Rifles) were honoured in this year's Lord Lieutenant's Awards at a ceremony on Sunday 9 October 2011 in the Bishop's Palace, Wells. After their citations were read out, Lady Elizabeth Gass JP presented each of them with a framed certificate in front of other dignitaries, families and friends.
The award of a Lord Lieutenant's Certificate for Meritorious Service recognises an individual's exceptional performance amongst the Reserves Forces and Cadet movement. In all cases candidates are required to demonstrate service of high quality, periods of intense output in support of their units and service to the community. Additionally nominees must display outstanding examples of leadership and enduring commitment.
Many congratulations to the award winners who were:
Lieutenant Dan Bull Platoon Commander Sexey's School, Salamanca Company.
Warrant Officer 2 Steve Pascoe (formerly REME) Salamanca Company Serjeant Major.
Serjeant Lizzie Morrissey Lufton Platoon Commander, Salamanca Company.
Mr Paul Robertshaw Ex Serjeant Major Instructor and Battalion First Aid Officer.
Our Commandant, Colonel Paul Richardson, who was present at the formal presentation, said 'I am extremely pleased to see our Battalion members receiving recognition for their hard work from Lady Gass today. They are excellent role models for the entire Somerset Army Cadet Force'.
At the same ceremony Jellalabad Cadet Company Cadet Serjeant Major James Lancey was invested as one of the Lord Lieutenant's cadets. Each year the top cadets in the County are recommended for this coveted role. Their duties include accompanying Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant to numerous events such as Royal Visits and Civic functions and acting as Aide-de-Camp for the 12 month period.
